Avoid These Mistakes for an Immaculate Bathroom

When was the last time you looked forward to cleaning your bathroom? If you’re like most homeowners, you probably feel a faint amount of dread at the mere thought of all of that scrubbing and bending down, but fear not — we’re here to help you keep your bathroom spotless without all of that pesky work! Here are 8 of the biggest bathroom cleaning fails that many homeowners make. By avoiding these, you can make your bathroom cleaning process much easier.

  1. Using Chemicals for Everything

Most people treat chemicals as the first and only method of cleaning. It’s true that chemical cleaners can help you tackle some of the toughest stains and grime, but most of your cleaning checklist should involve nothing more than a damp rag or steam mop, the latter of which will help you clean any hard floor in your house.

  1. Not Cleaning Behind the Toilet

It’s enough to clean the toilet bowl, right? Wrong! The area behind the toilet can harbor dust mites, cobwebs, bacteria, and even urine! Anyone who has a little boy knows about splashing, and because the toilet’s skirt, base, and rear are often neglected, they tend to be some of the dirtiest parts of any bathroom.

  1. Immediately Turning the Fan Off

Fans aren’t just for getting rid of odors. In fact, they’re primarily designed to remove humid air from your home, and turning them off the second you’re done in the shower can make your bathroom a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. To prevent this, you might consider adding a humidity sensor to your bathroom exhaust fan, which will allow the fan to automatically shut off once humidity is lower.

  1. Letting the Shower Curtain Go

Shower curtains aren’t disposable, but that doesn’t stop homeowners from replacing them every time they start to develop stains. That’s not to say that you need to spend half an hour every week scrubbing them by hand — just throw them in the washing machine with some vinegar, and they’ll come out as good as new.

  1. Not Vacuuming First

Nothing beats mopping for cleaning a laminate or tile floor, but you can save yourself a great deal of effort by simply vacuuming first. You’ll get rid of most of the dirt in one pass, and mopping will pick up the rest.

  1. Giving the Mat a Good Shake

Bathroom mats trap water, dirt, and bacteria, and giving them a good shake outside or vacuuming them off isn’t sufficient. At least once a month, toss them in the washing machine. You’ll be amazed at how soft they feel!

  1. Forgetting to Seal the Countertop

If you have a solid surface countertop, you can proceed to the next tip, but homeowners with marble or granite countertops should pay heed. When your countertop arrives from the manufacturer, it comes with a durable sealer that should last for at least a year. This sealer will break down over time as you use and clean the countertop, and to maintain the polished finish, you should reseal the surface at least once per year.

  1. Throwing Away Old Toothbrushes

Old toothbrushes too often get pitched into the garbage, but they’re perfect for cleaning grout lines, the edge between wall and floor, and other tiny details. You never know when a toothbrush will come in handy!
