Shower measurements are the part of a bathroom remodel nobody thinks about until something does not fit. Here is how it usually starts on job sites across Sacramento and Reno: a homeowner has already bought the grab bar. It is sitting in the box on the vanity. It is a 12-inch bar, it is beautiful, it was on sale, and it cannot go where they want it to go.
Not because there is anything wrong with a 12-inch grab bar. Because the wall behind the tile has studs 16 inches apart, and a 12-inch bar physically cannot reach two of them.

That is the whole story of shower measurements in one example. The numbers are not complicated. They are just unforgiving. A quarter inch in the wrong direction and the door will not close, the water runs the wrong way, or the bar you are leaning your full body weight on is held in by drywall.
So let us go through the shower measurements that actually matter — what they are, where they come from, and which ones tend to go sideways when nobody is checking.

Grab bar measurements: lengths, heights, and the wall behind them
Grab bars come in standard lengths — 12, 16, 18, 24, 32, 36, and 42 inches are the common ones. Each length has a job.
- 12″ and 16″ — short assist bars, usually vertical, near a shower entry or beside a bench. Good for steadying, not for full body weight transfers.
- 18″ vertical — the classic entry bar, mounted near the threshold to give you something to hold while you step over the curb.
- 24″ and 32″ — side wall bars in a standard alcove.
- 36″ — the back wall of a shower, and the rear wall at a toilet under ADA.
- 42″ — the side wall at a toilet under ADA, the longest bar most homes ever need.
The dimensional rules stay the same no matter which length you pick. The top of the gripping surface goes 33 to 36 inches above the finished floor. The bar itself should be 1¼ to 2 inches in outside diameter — thinner and arthritic hands cannot get purchase, thicker and your fingers cannot wrap all the way around. And there is exactly 1½ inches of space between the bar and the wall, which is not an aesthetic choice. It is so that if your hand slips, your wrist does not get trapped behind the bar.
Now here is the number nobody sees: 250 pounds, applied in any direction. That is the load a grab bar has to hold. Not 250 pounds hanging straight down — 250 pounds yanked sideways, upward, at whatever angle a falling body happens to apply it.
Drywall anchors do not do that. Toggle bolts, in most cases, do not do that. What does it is either landing both mounting flanges on solid studs, or having 2× wood blocking installed behind the wall before the tile went up — a decision that has to be made months before anyone thinks about grab bars.
Which brings us back to the 12-inch bar on the vanity. Studs are typically 16 inches on center. Center to center. A 12-inch bar’s mounting holes are roughly 11 inches apart. The math does not work. You either mount it at an angle to catch two studs, mount it into blocking that may or may not exist, or you accept that one end is anchored into nothing but ½ inch of gypsum.

Shower door measurements: why 27 inches is not 27 inches
Code sets a floor here: the access opening into a shower has to be at least 22 inches of clear, unobstructed finished width. That figure is roughly the shoulder width of an average adult. And hinged shower doors have to swing outward — so that if someone goes down inside the shower, the door is not blocked by their body.

Common door widths run 22 to 36 inches. A 27-inch door is a popular middle size. But the number on the box is the door panel, not the opening you get. Subtract hinge hardware, subtract the strike jamb, subtract the overlap, and a 27-inch door might give you 24 inches of clear passage. If you are planning around a walker or a shower chair, that difference decides whether the room works.
Two more shower measurements on the glass itself:
- Thickness. Framed enclosures typically use 3/16″ or ¼″ glass. Frameless needs 3/8″ or ½″, because the glass is doing the structural work the frame used to do.
- It must be tempered. Safety glazing is required in shower enclosures, full stop. Annealed glass breaks into blades. Tempered breaks into pebbles.
And the one that ends the most DIY glass projects: your walls are not square. They are almost never square. A frameless enclosure is cut to your opening, and if the opening is out of plumb by ⅜ of an inch over 6 feet — completely normal in a house built before 1990 — the glass either does not fit or it fits with a gap you can see daylight through. Framed enclosures have adjustment built into the jambs to absorb this. Frameless does not. That is why frameless is measured after the tile is set, by someone who will eat the cost if the measurement is wrong.
Shower measurements for the footprint
The residential code minimum is 900 square inches of interior area, with no dimension under 30 inches. There is an exception that lets one dimension drop to 25 inches if the total area hits 1,300 square inches, which is how those long narrow showers in older homes pass. You can read the requirement yourself in Section P2708 of the International Residential Code.
Critical detail: that 30 inches is measured finished interior — tile face to tile face. Not rough framing. Backer board, waterproofing membrane, thinset, and tile eat somewhere between ¾ and 1½ inches per wall. Frame a shower at exactly 30 inches and you will finish at about 28 and fail inspection.
Standard shower measurements you will actually be choosing between:
- 32″ × 32″ — passes code, works in a guest bath, tight for most adults.
- 36″ × 36″ — the NKBA comfort minimum. You can raise both arms to wash your hair without hitting a wall. This is the size we recommend most often.
- 60″ × 30″ or 60″ × 32″ — the standard alcove footprint, which is exactly the space a standard bathtub occupies. This is why tub-to-shower conversions are so common.
- 60″ × 36″ and up — room for a bench, a second showerhead, or a caregiver assisting.

For accessibility, the two ADA shower types have their own footprints: a transfer shower is 36″ × 36″, and a roll-in shower is a minimum of 30″ × 60″. Add a bench and you are looking at a seat 17 to 19 inches above the floor and at least 15 inches deep. We go deeper on this in our ADA-compliant bathroom remodeling guide.
Do not forget the room outside the shower either. You need clear floor space to dry off and turn around — code calls for at least 24 inches in front of the opening, and if a hinged door swings outward into that space, it needs somewhere to go.
The shower measurements you cannot see
This is where shower measurements stop being about comfort and start being about whether water ends up inside your floor joists.
- Drain size. A shower needs a 2-inch drain. A bathtub uses 1½ inches. A tub moves water slowly through a small outlet; a shower dumps it across a whole floor pan. This is the single most-missed item in tub-to-shower conversions — you are not swapping a fixture, you are opening the floor and upsizing the drain line.
- Slope. The shower floor pitches ¼ inch per foot toward the drain. Less and water sits. More and you feel like you are standing on a hillside. A 36-inch pan needs about 3/8 inch of fall from wall to drain, built into the mud bed — not something you can adjust later.
- Valve rough-in. Typically 42 to 48 inches above the floor for a stand-up shower. A tub/shower combo valve sits much lower, around 28 inches, because you need to reach it from inside the tub.
- Showerhead. Usually 78 to 80 inches. Worth adjusting for the tallest person in the house — free to change during rough-in, expensive to change after tile.
- Anti-scald. Shower valves must be pressure-balancing or thermostatic, limiting output to 120°F. This is a safety requirement, not a preference, and it matters most for exactly the people a walk-in shower is built for — older adults, whose skin burns faster and who may not react as quickly.
- Niche sizing. A recessed shelf between studs 16 inches on center gives you about 14½ inches of clear width. If you want wider, a stud gets cut, and a cut stud needs a header.
- Waterproofing height. The pan liner or membrane has to run up the walls and over the curb, several inches above the finished threshold. Get this wrong and the failure is invisible for two years, then shows up as a stain on the ceiling below.
Where shower measurements change at the state line
If you live in the Sacramento area and shop for fixtures online, this one will get you.
California caps showerheads at 1.8 gallons per minute at 80 psi under Title 20 and CALGreen. The federal standard — which is what applies in Nevada — is 2.5 gpm. So a showerhead that is perfectly legal in Reno is not legal to sell or install in Roseville. The California Energy Commission’s appliance efficiency rules spell out the requirement.
And California goes further: when a shower has more than one head on a single valve, the combined flow of all of them cannot exceed 1.8 gpm, unless the shower is designed so only one outlet runs at a time. That rain head plus body sprays layout you saw on a design site? In California, it has to be engineered around that limit. Handhelds count as showerheads too.
Every jurisdiction also amends the model codes, and Sacramento County, the City of Reno, Placer County, and Washoe County do not all read the same way. The number in a national guide is a starting point, not an answer.
Five ways shower measurements go wrong on DIY projects
- The grab bar into drywall. Covered above. It is the most dangerous one on this list because it fails under load, which means it fails during a fall.
- Framing to the finished dimension. Build to 30 inches, finish at 28, fail inspection, and now the tile comes off.
- Tub-to-shower with the old drain. The 1½-inch line stays, the shower backs up, and the fix is under the floor.
- Ordering frameless glass before tile. The walls move. The glass does not. Custom tempered glass cannot be recut.
- No blocking, no plan. This is the quiet one. A homeowner does a beautiful DIY shower at 55 and skips the blocking, because they do not need grab bars yet. At 72, they do — and now the only way to add them properly is to demolish the tile they installed themselves. Blocking costs almost nothing during a remodel. Adding it later means doing the shower twice.
The licensing math in California and Nevada
Separate from whether you can do the work is whether anyone you hire to help is allowed to.
California: as of January 1, 2025, AB 2622 raised the unlicensed-work threshold from $500 to $1,000 in combined labor and materials. But two conditions get overlooked constantly — the exemption does not apply if the work requires a building permit, and it does not apply if the unlicensed person hires anybody to help. The Contractors State License Board bulletin is blunt about both. A bathroom remodel that relocates plumbing needs a permit — which means the exemption is gone regardless of the dollar figure.
Nevada: the Nevada State Contractors Board exemption covers repair and maintenance work under $1,000, and it explicitly does not cover work of a type performed by a plumbing contractor, or any work requiring a permit. Shower plumbing is plumbing work. There is no dollar amount that makes it exempt.
There is also a consumer-side consequence people do not think about. Unpermitted bathroom work surfaces at resale, during appraisal, and — worst case — during an insurance claim after a water loss. A leak traced to unpermitted plumbing is a difficult conversation with an adjuster.
Shower measurements FAQ
How high should a grab bar be in a shower?
33 to 36 inches above the finished floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface. For a seated user, a back-wall bar is often set lower, around 30 to 33 inches.
What is the smallest shower allowed by code?
900 square inches of finished interior area with no dimension under 30 inches — so 30″ × 30″ is the practical floor. Confirm with your local building department, since jurisdictions amend the code.
What size shower door do I need?
At least 22 inches of clear finished opening. Door panels commonly run 22 to 36 inches, but measure the clear passage, not the panel — hardware and overlap can cost you 2 to 3 inches.
Can I put a grab bar on a fiberglass or acrylic shower wall?
Yes and No. Acrylic is installed directly to a backer board making the use of an anchor possible. It is recommended to plan for the installation of a grab bar on acrylic walls by placing OSB or 2 x 6 backing to lag bolt into increasing the weight rating of up to 500 lbs. Whereas fiberglass will have a noticeable gap between the nailing flange and interior surface of the fiberglass wall making it unlikely an anchor will be enough to support a grab bar.
Does a walk-in shower need a curb?
A standard curb runs 4 to 6 inches. A curbless or roll-in shower drops the threshold to a half inch or less, which is what makes it wheelchair and walker accessible — but it requires recessing the pan into the floor structure, so the framing has to accommodate it.

None of this is meant to talk anyone out of understanding their own bathroom. An informed homeowner asks better questions and gets better work — we have always believed that.
But there is a real difference between knowing the shower measurements and being responsible for them. A licensed installer carries the permit, the inspection, the workers’ comp, and the warranty. If a measurement is wrong, it is their problem to fix. If you measured it, it is yours — and in a shower, the expensive mistakes are the ones you cannot see until the drywall downstairs starts to stain.
